Title:Melanoma whole-genome sequencing

Abstract:Researchers find mutations of PREX2, a gene associated with breast cancer, in about 14 percent of melanomas. They also find evidence that the rate of mutation is highest in people with a history of chronic sun exposure.

Title:Surgical margins for melanoma in situ

Abstract:Study concludes that the frequently recommended 5-mm margin for melanoma in situ is inadequate. The authors therefore recommend that surgical excision of melanoma in situ should include 9 mm of normal-appearing skin, similar to that for early invasive melanoma.

Abstract:Updated guidelines include information on vemurafenib (Zelboraf, Plexxikon/Roche) and ipilimumab (Yervoy, Bristol-Myers Squibb) for metastatic disease and a reduced emphasis on testing for metastases in early-stage melanoma.
